Google Migration to 1st Price – Our insights (Part 2)

2 months after the Google migration to 1st Price: Read about Adomik observations.

Adomik, 27th November 2019

The migration to 1st price is now well behind us, so it is time to conduct an assessment on a longer time span than in our previous blog articles dated October 10th and September 23rd.

Please note two significant events in the recent past, they can explain important changes in the market:

  • The move to 1st price by Ad Manager
  • The implementation of the Unified Pricing Rules (UPR) at scale

We focussed on “structural” changes rather than on the evolution of specific Publishers. Still, with UPR, some Publishers have significantly changed their pricing setup and how Header Bidding or Open Bidding (the former Exchange Bidding or EBDA) competes with Authorized Buyers (GAM’s programmatic activity, former Google AdX).

Adomik Launches WATCH Programmatic Market Intelligence Index

Adomik Launches WATCH, the Programmatic Market Intelligence Index

Programmatic market intelligence, pricing & optimization for all programmatic players across the value chain

The Adomik platform was originally created as a tool for Publishers to monitor and optimize their programmatic revenue. Over time, Adomik has built the most comprehensive “programmatic advertising” data set on the market.

The Adomik vision is to fuel trading across the marketplace and to develop a terminal dedicated to programmatic advertising, available to all professionals of the value chain.

How to leverage market data?

Adomik is aggregating “programmatic advertising” data from more sources than anybody else (SSPs, Ad Servers, Native platforms…). This gives Adomik unparalleled visibility into the programmatic value chain.

Leveraging market data to make the programmatic ecosystem work better

So a question arose: “How to leverage this data and ease the flow of budgets from the buy-side to the sell-side”?

Today, Adomik is exploring relationships with SSPs, DSPs and Agencies/Buyers in this spirit. We are discussing sharing “programmatic market data” with all players as well as collecting and aggregating additional data in order to:

  • Fight fragmentation & transparency issues
  • Create marketplace liquidity, for supply to meet demand and by removing frictions
  • Increase the flow of revenue towards our publishers seller clients

SELL Market Alerts for Publishers’ Sales Team

Feature Presentation

Everyday, a batch of fresh alerts is provided in the Sell UI so publishers’ sales teams can act quickly on new business opportunities.

As a reminder, Sell is our exclusive advertising market index which allows you to monitor your programmatic demand activity, compare your business to the market and discover new opportunities to grow your advertising revenue.

Market Alerts help publishers to easily detect new programmatic campaign launches on the market and discover market activity.

An alert is triggered when the market revenue increases on a buyer / brand combination compared with the average past 6 days revenue.

SELL Market Alerts Feature Presentation image

Source: Adomik Sell – UK

In order to size the opportunity

  • The alerts display the growth percentage of the campaign revenue in the market on the 7th day compared with the average revenue on the 6 days before.
  • The alerts also show in which “top…” the campaign belongs when it has peaked (top 5, top 10, top 20… campaigns in the market).

Publishers are able to check which transaction type is responsible for most the campaign growth (open auction, deal, preferred deal, programmatic guaranteed, first look).

The feature displays data interpretation tooltips next to the alerts so publishers can easily identify their own trend on the campaign scope.

How does this work?

Adomik processes publishers data across many markets and many SSPs and benchmarks individual publishers trends against anonymised and aggregated market data. Therefore, on each alert scope, publishers are able to compare their own trend versus the market:

  • “You are behind the market”: you don’t benefit from the market growth on the scope of the alert or you don’t have revenue coming from the buyer / brand. That’s a clear business opportunity.

Source: Adomik Sell – US

  • “You are on par with the market”: you have the same growth as the market on the buyer / brand couple. You’re good on that scope of demand! Keep on with the great efforts.

Source: Adomik Sell – France

  • “You are ahead of the market”: you are growing faster than the market on the buyer/brand couple or you don’t have the same growth but you remain ahead overall! Congratulations. You’re better than the market on the demand scope.

New Dimensions

Transaction Types: Programmatic Guaranteed and Preferred Deals

Source: Adomik Sell – UK

The Sell tools now include GAM-DFP programmatic guaranteed and preferred deal data in the US, French, UK, Spanish, and Dutch programs. Now, you can:

  • Analyze the weight of each of those transaction types into the market revenue and their growth through time. You can track if investments are increasing in programmatic guaranteed and preferred deals compared with other transaction types (open auction, deals …).
  • Monitor which brands are transacting through those sales channels, which programmatic buyers are bidding for them and their average market CPMs
  • Combine PG and PD dimensions with all the other dimensions available in Sell, and slice your spent by brands, buyers, formats, devices … and also by media types

Media Types

Media Types

Source: Adomik Sell – UK

Sell has opened a window to video inventory. Because CPMs and demand can be very different between display and video, the Sell tools now include the Media Types dimension in all geo programs. The media type dimension is compatible with all the other dimensions present in Sell.

Benchmarking use cases

You can now compare your revenue against the market share of revenue for each media types. You can also:

  • Focus on display or video to identify deal opportunities and market prices
  • Dive deeper into instream data to monitor high-value campaign opportunities and CPMs
  • Monitor the market spent and growth in native advertising, classic display or audio …

Inventory development use cases

  • Identify the opportunity cost of not offering Video or Native inventory by looking at their share of voice in the market
  • When investing on Video or Native, Sell can help you identify demand interested into those media types and encourage spent on their properties by offering the correct and fair price

Bidders

Bidders

Source: Adomik Sell – UK

Sell now includes the bidder dimension so you can:

  • Monitor the market revenue by DSPs
  • Analyze drops of DSP spent on their inventory vs. their overall market activity
  • Slice the market revenue by bidders or breakdown the bidder dimension by Partners to identify winning combinations
